For the last 16 years, together with Dr. Mary Romo, I have had the privilege of accompanying hundreds of adults on their journeys to become Catholic through St. Ignatius’ Order of Christian Initiation for Adults, (previously known as RCIA). My faith has emerged to be the central axis of my life. It has shaped me, guided me, inspired me, and comforted me. My faith is a treasure that has come to touch each facet of my life. Throughout my time with the this community, I have seen the enrichment of so many people who have let faith become their beacon too. At the heart of any Christian endeavor is coming to the understanding that Jesus’ teachings about love can be applied to any situation or circumstance. And as we introduce folks to the Catholic tradition, we do so with this notion in mind. The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) program is ultimately a pathway to discovery and serving as a catechist means we get to participate in the spiritual growth of people who continue to search for God’s presence. As a lifelong Catholic, sharing our faith this way is truly inspiring because we get to see the fruits of our tradition take form.
This dynamic is not only shared by Mary Romo and me, but also by those who come to volunteer to be a sponsor. A sponsor sharing their faith creates a deeply intimate exchange. It forms a bond with those seeking to grow their understanding of Christ and his church. This connection has led to the forging of lifelong friendships. These relationships, over time, are the foundation of our OCIA community. Sharing our Christianity this way not only helps those who want to become Catholic, but it also serves to affirm our own faith. I’ve served as a sponsor many times and each instance has gifted me with a truly rewarding experience.Being a companion to someone who is looking to become Catholic, is truly a gift. I say this because of the many friendships I’ve made with folks along the way. Before I became a Deacon, I thought I couldn’t be a sponsor because I didn’t know EVERYTHING about being Catholic. While a vast knowledge of our tradition is helpful, it certainly isn’t a prerequisite to assuming the role of sponsor. A willingness to accompany someone on their path is most essential as this is a ministry of presence.
Sponsors in our parish’s OCIA program are welcome to join our weekly classes Sunday mornings after the 10 am Mass. And indeed, many of them choose classtime to connect with their sponsee. The time requirements are minimal and are easily overshadowed by the bounty of this rich experience. When I reflect upon those folks who accompanied me along my continuing faith journey, I am filled with gratitude and awe. Each person who helped me has contributed to the flourishing of my faith and to where ministry has led me. We have some pretty remarkable people in our parish that can bring their gifts to those who are seeking to become Catholic.
