    • Baptism and Christian Initiation
      The sacraments

    • Baptism marks the start of our Christian initiation, welcomes us into the Body of Christ, the Church, and calls us to share in her mission.  Through Baptism, we are reborn into Christ Jesus, called into new life with Him, and freed from the bonds of sin. Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1213)

Though some people are baptized as adults, most Catholics receive Baptism as young children. This is referred to as “infant baptism.”

    • Infant Baptism

The parents’ decision to have their child baptized by a priest or a deacon of their parish is an act of true love toward their child. Baptism allows the child to be welcomed in the Church at an early age, and to grow in the love and grace of God in a very special way. In the Gospels, Jesus says that to love God one must love like children do. Baptism, hence, is a gift from the parents who wish for their child to grow in the knowledge of God and as part of the Christian community, and for their child to have the support of godparents as guides in the faith.

    • Baptism of Adults

Adults who are interested in being Baptized into the Catholic Church are invited to participate in a program called The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This program also helps to welcome Christians baptized in other denominations into full communion with the Catholic Church, and baptized Catholic adults seeking to become fully initiated through reception of the other Sacraments (Eucharist and/or Confirmation). Please visit our RCIA page for for more information on how to participate.

    • Reflection Session

Prior to Baptism, parents and godparents are asked to participate in a Baptism Reflection Session. These seminars are generally held the third Thursday of the month from 7:30pm-8:30 pm on Zoom. The session for April 2025 will be held on the 4th Thursday of the month, on April 24. Click below to enter the zoom session.

    • At Saint Ignatius Parish it is our preference to welcome infants and children as new members of the Catholic Community through the Sacrament of Baptism while surrounded by the worshipping community at our 10:00 am Sunday Mass. Children are introduced at the start of the liturgy and Baptized during Mass.  These are the scheduled Sunday Mass Baptism Dates:

      Baptism Dates 2025

      Sunday, January 26, 2025
      Sunday, February 23, 2025
      Sunday, March 16, 2025
      Sunday, April 27, 2025
      Sunday, May 25, 2025
      Sunday, June 22, 2025
      Sunday, July 27, 2025
      Sunday, August 24, 2025
      Sunday, September 28, 2025
      Sunday, October 26, 2025
      Sunday, November 23, 2025
      Sunday, December 28, 2025

If families face special circumstances that make Baptism on any of these dates difficult, it is possible to inquire about scheduling a Single-Family Baptism. Depending upon the church schedule and the availability of a parish priest, these Baptisms are sometimes scheduled on Friday and Saturday mornings, and can also be scheduled on a weekday.

Please contact Don Crean in the parish office at 415.422.6520 or [email protected] to discuss Baptism requirements and to inquire about scheduling.
