1. What about your background helped prepare you for taking on this opportunity?
Before working in nonprofit communications at Ploughshares Fund and the Sierra Club, I learned about communications as an English major at UC Berkeley and at SF State, where I studied Finnegans Wake. At UC Berkeley I studied the Bible in literature courses. I’m proud to have worked with the legendary poet Thom Gunn there after graduating too! I learned marketing, part of communications, through 12 years at an Irish sports broadcasting start-up. I also went to Catholic school here in San Francisco, at Stuart Hall, so that helps!
2. Why are “communications” so important?
Communications build communities.
They draw people together. If we work together, there is almost nothing we can’t do. I happen to specialize in certain aspects of communications, but in reality communications connect all of us, not only to each other, but to life itself and the spiritual world. Communications are always at least two-way, and that is what makes them so important.
