Every year on the first Sunday of Advent, which is next Sunday, our old friend Jesuit, Fr. Tom Lucas, pastor of St. Ignatius Sacramento, joins us for an appeal to help the Casa de los Pobres, the House of the Poor, operated by the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Peace in Tijuana. Over the past 26 years or so, our community has purchased thousands of blankets to help needy families who live just across the border. The large, heavy blankets are manufactured in Mexico and cost about $40 each. We are asking for your help again this year. Representatives will be at our doors this next weekend asking for your cash donations or a check made out to the Casa de Los Pobres. They will also have a flyer that includes the Casa’s US mailing address and the Casa de los Pobres website for online donations. You can also give today by going to our website or using the link in your email newsletter. Your support for this work of Christmas charity is something the sisters have depended on for years. They are grateful for your support, and they pray God’s blessing on your generous families.
Saint Ignatius Church offers many places for quiet contemplation. The small chapels invite private prayer, moments of silence, and personal connection through faith. Just beyond the chapels, Manresa Gallery offers another kind of sacred space—one where art opens a door to reflection, inspiration, and dialogue.
On Sunday, November 2, we commemorated the places of sorrow in our lives, and remembered our beloved faithful departed through prayer and music. Our choir and ensemble led us in British composer Bob Chilcott’s Requiem (2010). Thank you for joining us for Requiem Mass. See photos and video, hear the music, and pray for all our beloved faithful departed.
Help support St. Ignatius Parish's Giving Tree Project and bring holiday cheer to children, teens, adults and seniors in need in San Francisco. Simply take a tag (or more!) from the Giving Tree near the Parker Street entrance. Help us reach 100% fulfillment and return your gift by December 14 so that the gifts can be distributed to our participants. Please return your gift-tag with a gift card firmly attached in the basket by the Mary Altar at the front left of the main altar. Simply attach the gift tag to the gift, no box or additional wrapping is required! After church hours you can bring your gift to the Parish office or put it in the mail slot.
Las Vecinas' main fundraising event, the Online Silent Auction, will be held from Saturday, November 15, to Tuesday, November 25. We will hold our annual Crafts Sale on Sunday, November 23, in the morning. These two events are a key aspect of the mission of Las Vecinas.
Artist and parishioner Alex Salceanu will share his body of artwork which collects the narratives of immigrants and their choices related to factors that push and pull people to leave their families, homes and cultures in hope of a brighter future. We hope you can join us for the Witness Art Exhibition!
Project description
Artist and parishioner Alexandru Salceanu will share his long-term collaborative video project entitled Witness. This project involves refugee/immigrant communities to create autobiographical video portraits. Through an intentional methodology, participants tell their own story in the language of their choice, are involved throughout the creative process, and have agency over composition, audio narrative, and edits. The goal of “Witness” is to create a publicly-accessible visual and oral archive of immigrant experiences that’s shared with the public through immersive exhibits, public projections, and its website.
About the artist
Alexandru Salceanu is a Romanian-American interdisciplinary artist. Born in Communist Romania and emigrating in 1992, his work concentrates on reconciling his cultural identity with his assimilation into American life. This life altering move has driven him to explore many layered historical and aesthetic references. How does one understand the dissonance of political and economic theory compared to the intimacy of lived experience? This is where his exploration and his creative focus lives: Alexandru layers historical events, aesthetic references, and personal accounts together by using a variety of media—photography, video, projection mapping, painting, and mixed media. As social practice, he works in and with communities to make collaborative artwork that facilitates autobiographical storytelling.
Through his work, he utilizes art’s transformative power to humanize issues, challenge perspectives and encourage a more personal encounter. He investigate the quiet characteristics of resilience and dignity, power and joy present within pervasive cycles of struggle and the ways people overcome them.
